LIVING TOWER

HOTEL ShabbyShabby Competition
July 2014
Mannheim, Germany

Hotel rooms are often devoid of character because they do not attempt to make any connection to the city outside. Instead they rely on their generic interior to offer the visitor something familiar: a safe place in an alien metropolis.

In response to the theme (recycled materials and structures) the Living Tower proposes a living room for the city; a room that is part of the public realm so that you are able to experience Mannheim fully for one night.

The program is made up of a series of vertical domestic spaces. The key space is an elevated dining room with a large reveal on two sides, making it highly visible within the public realm. This means our hotel literally opens its doors to the city, and invites locals in. Above sits the private realm: a sleeping area to retreat after aperitifs, and in the morning, a room with a view.
